Here I am, Dawn Devine, aka Davina, and author of the book The Cloth of Egypt: All About Assiut. In 2012, when we were working on photography for the book, I had thousands of photos taken in studio and on location. One of my favorite locations to shoot is the Rosicrucian Park in the Rose Garden district of San Jose. I love the kitschy vibe that, when turned black and white, provides enough “essence of Egypt” to give an authentic, if touristy, vibe. The image above of me was taken by renowned belly dance photographer Michael Baxter and I was wearing a modern assiut robe borrowed from my co-author Alisha Westerfeld. Below I’m wearing a vintage assiut dress dating to the 1970’s. The research and study of antique, vintage, and modern assiut has been my passion and my book is the culmination of decades of detailed research. I’m so very proud of these images and I hope someday to make it to Egypt to capture some similar images on location. In the meantime, I look forward to enjoying the Rosicrucian Museum and Park right here in the south of the San Francisco/Bay Area.
