On a drive north through San Francisco and into the celebrated California Wine Country, I learned a hard lesson. When taking photos with your cell phone, do not use a filtering app to adjust your favorite images. I was riding in the back seat, leaned over and caught a wonderful image of the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was a bit foggy and hazy and I thought this image would look great in black and white. I took the latest photo app and ran the image through a B/W filter and cropped it. On my phone, it looked stunning and I posted it to Instagram. However, the app stripped out so much data from the image that it’s now a pixilated mess. Lesson learned? Don’t experiment with new software with your favorite images. Or better yet, stick to better quality applications and avoid the “Software du Jour.”
